How should I format videos for upload?

Updated: 06/05/2014

Smuggers can upload stunning HD? videos up to 20 minutes long!

FYI: Your video can be up to 20 minutes in length and 3GB in size.

Stuff to know:

1. Uploader:

Use our HTML5 uploader in Google Chrome. (No Chrome? Get it now!)

When you click the Upload button?, we usually remember the uploader you used last time and take you to it. But near the bottom of the page on the left you'll see a link that says, "Try a different uploader." Click that and choose HTML5 (first on the list) or Olde Faithful (last on the list).

2. Format:

No worries, 99% of the time we can convert from whatever you upload to the ever-so-cool h.264 format which works on iPods, iPhones, AppleTV, PlayStations, and many other consumer devices.

But what comes off your camera could be bloated and take a long time to upload. So you might consider using a program like MPEG Streamclip or Quicktime Pro to convert to h.264 before uploading. (Step-by-step instructions here!)

3. Patience!

We can't convert your videos as fast as we can prepare still images for display. It could be a while before a video is visible in your gallery but good things come to those who wait.

4. Nuked:

We don't keep a copy of the original video you upload. We make high-quality display copies, which are probably altered from what you send us.

5. SmugMungous HD:

Make jaws drop to the floor by adding videos up to 1920x1080p! Show the world your television-clear movies, just like you shot them.

6. Display options:

We create web and DVD display sizes in case your adoring fans can't view 1080p videos. This means they'll still be able to view it with small monitors or slower connections.

We also support 1280x720 and 960x540x30p. We store 1280x720 as well as 960x540 if the video is 1280x720 or above. If the video is between 960x540 and 1280x720, we just store the 960x540.

7. Video preview:

We'll pick a frame partway into your video to represent the video in your gallery, but if you'd prefer a different image to display, just replace it.

In Legacy SmugMug  After adding the video to your site, just navigate to it and then click Tools > This Photo > More > Replace Video Preview Image.

In New SmugMug  After adding the video to your site, just navigate to it and then click the Wrench button.   >Edit>Replace Preview

Be sure to choose an image from your computer that matches the dimensions of your video.

8. Pearls of wisdom:

They fall from the lips of other Smug Mugs who'd love to hear yours too.
